Malachi's Log: 031029 (wednesday)

Yeah, I know, I'm a slacker.

Toward the beginning of October, William, Doug, and I went to Batty's Best Game Fest near Atlanta. Four other guys from the Nashville group also went (Jeff, Bob, Andy, and Clint). It was a lot of fun. Many hours of gaming and we got to see Lewis (flippy) for a little while. We ate at the Mellow Mushroom across the street from the place we were staying at. Their pesto pizza was very weird. We also at at an Indian place down the street, but the food wasn't nearly hot enough. The bread was good though. I picked up a copy of Wyatt Earp and several Icehouse stashes.

The weekend after Batty's I went over to Neal's (tempest) place and played some games with some of his friends. We played Apples to Apples (which I aquired for the occasion) and Illuminati. They really enjoyed Apples to Apples.

I've finally gotten around to going to the Go club a couple of times. It's pretty good with decent turnout (4-10 people). I'm a pretty weak player, though, but it's still fun. I kind of subverted things last week by bringing Set, Though the Desert, and Dvonn and getting Jason to play them with me.

Last weekend Doug and William came up for Phreaknic. They drove in Friday afternoon. We went out to eat with Erin, Joey, Julie, and Kimberly at the Green Hills Grille, then we (sans Erin) went back to Joey and Julie's and played games until around 1am. Apples to Apples was a hit there as well. Then we went back to my place. William went to bed and I played Go and a couple other games with Doug.

Saturday we went to Phreaknic at around 2pm after eating lunch at Sole Mio. Then we went to my place to pick up Kimberly and some games and left to join Joey and Julie at Cuisine of India. I picked it because none of us had tried it before. I thought it was good. Hot was very spicy. Kimberly was disturbed because her meal came with peppers and it wasn't described on the menu as such. After dinner we went to Ben and Jerry's and got some desert. I got mango lime sorbet. Pretty good. Then we went back to Joey and Julie's and played more games. At around 12:30am we headed back to my place. Doug went to bed and William played a few games with me.

Sunday we played a few more games before Doug and William each headed out.

Yesterday Kimberly and I carved pumpkins. Mine is sort of a demon face that doesn't go all the way through so it just glows. I'm not happy with it, but I didn't have the right tools. I ended up using a dremel tool for a lot of the work. The we watched the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All I have to say is "huh?"

Friday Kimberly and I are going to Bill and Pam's halloween party. Hopefully I'll be able to wrangle some people into playing a few games. I'm sure Kimberly will want to play Apples to Apples.

I've been thinking about the way that many 3+ player games are fundamentally different from two player games in that many of the depend on the interplay of people's decisions and personalities to give the game the spark that makes it work. With two player games you don't have that; it has to work on the merits of the game itself and not on the interactions of the personalities of the players. I think I tend to favor those games that have a mechanism that doesn't depend on the interplay of multiple other players to make it "work".

I also realized recently that I really hate luck based games. I would much rather lose a game of skill than win a game of luck and feel like I did nothing to contribute to winning.
